American Hospital Association (AHA) Training Physicians on Caring for Human Trafficking Victims
Human trafficking is considered the modern form of slavery impacting every state, gender, age group and ethnicity. Since 2007, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received 1,523 calls regarding human trafficking that resulted in 404 cases in the state of Indiana alone. According to the AHA, in 2016 over 7,500 cases of human trafficking were reported in the United States. A 2017 survey report from the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST) found that over half of labor and sex trafficking survivors surveyed had accessed health care at least once while being trafficked. The AHA has developed a series of webinars aimed at healthcare providers to educate on caring for these victims.
