Social Determinants of Health ICD-10 Codes

The Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) is encouraging providers to begin recording data on members' social determinants of health utilizing the International Classification of Disease (ICD) version 10.  The September 25, 2018 IHCP bulletin cites that socioeconomic factors have a meaningful impact on health outcomes and in order to mitigate these negative impacts they must begin properly identifying, tracking and evaluating these social determinants.  Coders may use notes from any member of the care team, such as social workers, nurses, or case managers, as evidence to code for potential health risks not typically included in a clinical diagnoses.

In the first quarter of 2018, the American Hospital Association (AHA) issued a Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS with an effective date of February 18 providing clarification the purpose of these codes and guidance for provider documentation.
